About Dr Heaney:

  • Dr Margot Heaney is a consultant anaesthetist and Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists.
  • As an anaesthetist, Dr Heaney is a medical specialist who will be working with your surgeon during your operation.

Prior to your procedure:

  • Please fill out the Anaesthetic pre-operative questionnaire on this website. – You will have already received/ completed a similar questionnaire for the hospital, however this is not provided to your anaesthetist prior to the day of surgery. To ensure Dr Heaney is properly prepared for your anaesthetic, please complete this pre-operative questionnaire to the best of your ability.
  • Where relevant, you will receive instructions about your regular medications. (Please note- if you are on Wegovy, Ozempic or Mounjaro, you will receive special fasting instructions).
  • You will be contacted by Central Coast Anaesthetics for informed financial consent prior to your procedure- as some procedures may have a gap cost.

On the day of your procedure:

  • Please bring any letters from previous anaesthetists with you to the hospital.
  • Please bring all your normal medications with you.
  • If you require a CPAP overnight at home- please bring this to the hospital. Please arrive in the hospital at your allocated time so that the admission process can be completed before your scheduled surgery time.
  • The hospital admissions unit or day-surgery unit will notify you when you must arrive.
  • Please ensure you have someone to take you home and stay with you overnight.
  • Dr Heaney will discuss the options for your anaesthetic, including the type of anaesthetic or sedation, pain management, potential complications and risks, and provide an opportunity for you to ask questions.

Can I eat and drink before my anaesthetic?

  • You will be advised of your fasting times by the admission department of the hospital. 
  • If you are on Ozempic, Wegovy or another type of GLP-1 agonist, please fast for 24hrs prior to your procedure.  You may continue with clear fluids as advised by the hospital.
  • You may take medication prior to the procedure with a small sip of water.  

After your procedure:

  • Day surgery patients:
    • You will be provided with verbal and written instructions on all relevant aspects of post-anaesthesia and surgical care. Please keep these instructions handy so that you can refer to them if required. A contact place and telephone number for emergency medical care should also be provided.
    • If you require pain relief after your procedure, a script will be provided.
  • Inpatients:
    • You will be followed up by your surgical specialist.
